Can't connect to IRC

Postby sarah » Mon Feb 01, 2010 4:29 pm

I cannot connect to any IRC.
I got a new modem for my 115Mbps connection, new IP came with it.
I've managed connect on the flash chat for a few minutes after a dozen tries, but not since then, and not on mIRC or Icechat.

At first I get
Code: Select all
[03:13] --Resurrection.GeekShed.net-- *** Looking up your hostname...
[03:13] --Resurrection.GeekShed.net-- *** Checking ident...
[03:13] --Resurrection.GeekShed.net-- *** Couldn't resolve your hostname; using your IP address instead
[03:13] --Resurrection.GeekShed.net-- *** No ident response; username prefixed with ~

It then hangs.

Other times it will connect to the server, but will not join channels.
This also happens when I try to join Wyldryde, iPocalypse.
I then disconnect with the error:
Code: Select all
Socket Error: 10053 : Connection is aborted due to timeout or other failure (Server)

mIRC will give a timeout error.

I have tried ports:
6660, 6661, 6662, 6663, 6664, 6665, 6666, 6668, 6669, all act the same way as 6667

Hello,

First of all it seems that the server you are connecting to is far away. Look on this page the servers page (http://www.geekshed.net/servers/) and on the map find the nearest server to you. Clicking on the nearest server pin to you will open a box and tell you the url to the server (e.g. frack.geekshed.net). Take the nearest server address to you and connect to GeekShed with the server address instead of using irc.geekshed.net.

This should solve your problem. If not then go to http://www.pingtest.net/ and see if it is your ping.

Hope that helps,
edgy :geek:

It doesn't matter what server I attempt to connect to, I get the same results everytime.
There no ping problems.

Well, you're connecting so it's not a firewall stopping you. You might get some more help if an IRCop sees this thread

Try connecting using port
1755, or 1494 or 7070

Also, try a specefic server for testing, such as Equinox.geekshed.net 208.68.18.177

Try connecting with telnet or netcat:

telnet irc.geekshed.net 6667

On connecting type:

USER test 0 * :test
NICK test-telnet

If you get the MOTD type:

JOIN #channel

If that works it's a client problem. If not, it's a connection problem.

Connecting to telnet from any port to any server doesn't work, I get the same response as the first code box.
Connecting with Icehat to irc.geekshed.net on 1755 or 1494 works.

Looks like you need to contact your ISP. Try another computer first.
